Hampshire, England, is exploring how Pharmacists may be the key to reducing the workload of GPs, according to a recent article from the University of Portsmouth.
Statistics in Hampshire show that 60% of a doctor’s time is spent reviewing patients with long-term, chronic illnesses. The ongoing study is examining whether with additional training, Pharmacists, who are already extremely knowledgeable about medicines and interactions, could take on the management of patient-care for these cases. Expanding the role of Pharmacists in healthcare in this way, it is hoped, could free GPs to spend more time treating more complex cases.
The results of this report, expected in June, could have direct influence on hundreds of doctors’ practices in England.
