Drug Dispensing Machines May Change the Way You Fill Your Next Prescription

Getting your prescription filled as quickly as you can take out cash isn’t that far fetched.

The government of Ontario has introduced a bill that would allow patients to refill medications through a special drug dispensing machine, with the aim of making it easier for to fill renewed prescriptions.

How it works:

  1. The machine makes a scan of the prescription, which is transmitted to a pharmacist on a separate site.
  2. The pharmacist approves the medication and relays relative information about dosage and side effects via video phone.
  3. The medication is then identified through radio frequency and is dispensed immediately.

This new technology is currently being tested at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre in Toronto. Since its launch in June of 2008, more than 12,000 prescriptions have been filled without any error.

If the bill is passed, these drug dispensing machines could soon be found in malls and medical centers across Ontario.
